Bristol Festival of School Sport and Culture - inspired by London 2012
University of Bristol as partner of RELAYS Project
Region: South West
Theme: Sport
In 2009 the RELAYS led Bristol Festival of School Sport and Culture saw over 1,300 pupils, 18 schools, and almost 150 volunteers come together to make one fantastic event. The Festival was the first HEI led event in the UK to be awarded the Inspired By 2012 Logo.
The Festival was organised and run by a partnership group consisting of the University of Bristol, West of England Sports Trust, Bristol City Council, Healthy Schools Bristol, Filton College and Bristol's three School Sport Partnerships. Through incorporation of the Festival in the South West's RELAYS Project, the Festival has become more sustainable and broad reaching. RELAYS is a jointly funded project by HEFCE and the Legacy Trust UK.
Many different organisations helped make the Festival a significant part of the city's community and sports development. Though using the Olympic and Paralympic values as inspiration for this collaborative event the stakeholders seek to ensure a worthwhile legacy and a range of opportunities for the young people involved.
By having the city's Healthy Schools team involved the important messages of physical activity, nutrition and healthy lifestyle has been passed on. By way of evidence, participants at the Festival had the opportunity to make delicious fruit smoothies and discuss healthy living issues.
The pupils that attended the event were those who wouldn't typically have the opportunity to represent their school in sport. They all enjoyed the chance to put on a Festival t-shirt, watch an opening ceremony dance routine, (Fairfield High and Cotham School) and meet sporting stars such as Olympic athlete, Jason Gardner and sailing Paralympian, Stephen Thomas. The event was completely inclusive and involved young people of all abilities participating.
Activities included Ultimate Frisbee, Street Dance, Lacrosse, Xtreme Golf, Rowing, Table Tennis, Flag Football, Mini Tennis, Strike & Field, Judo/Ju-Jitsu, Cycling, Orienteering and Tag Rugby. Student volunteers from the University of Bristol and Filton College and the School Sport Co-ordinators all supported the running of these events.
Robbie Fox, RELAYS (Regional Education Legacy for Arts and Youth Sports) School Event Coordinator from the University, said:
“The event reflects how the city is working together to try to encourage sport and healthy living at every level. Being awarded use of the Inspired by 2012 logo reinforces what a fantastic event the Festival is. It recognises how all involved, whether a young person, coach, volunteer or partner organisation, have come together in the spirit of the Olympic and Paralympic values.”
