The 36-year-old cyclist attained BSc Honours in applied Sports Science from the University at the start of his career and was awarded an honorary doctorate from the same institution in 2005.

He also holds honorary degrees from Heriot-Watt University and the University of St Andrews.

Sir Chris is one of Team GB's medal prospects at the London 2012 Games and will be competing in the team sprint and keirin.

The multiple world and Olympic track cyclist, who polled the most number of votes among the 542 members of the British team to receive the honour, said: "I'm absolutely delighted and honoured to have been voted as the flag bearer for Team GB.

"To lead out your team at a home Olympics is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity and one that that I can't wait to experience in just a few days time."
