Six judokas and three coaches are spending a week at the University as they finalise their plans ahead of London 2012, and as part of the schedule, talented individuals from the University and various local clubs will take part in training sessions and pit their wits against Australia’s best.

On top of training, the team will also get a chance to see some of the area’s most popular attractions including the Blackcountry Museum and Molineux football stadium.

The squad is led by Daniel Kelly, who is making his fourth successive Olympic appearance, with a host of exciting young competitors hoping to win only the country’s third medal in the sport since it was introduced to the Games in 1964.

Director of Sport at the University of Wolverhampton and former judo international Mike Chamberlain said: “The University’s Walsall Campus offers the perfect environment for the Australian team, with the best judo training facilities in the country complemented by modern campus facilities to give them a truly excellent experience.

“The University Judo Club and its national level coaching staff very much look forward to working with the Australians and helping them maximise their medal chances during the Games.”

The sports centre at the Walsall campus opened in 2004 and is recognised by the British Judo Association as a high performance centre for junior players.

University of Wolverhampton Vice-Chancellor, Professor Geoff Layer said: “We are delighted to be hosting members of the Australian Judo team at our Walsall Campus. Our elite sports facilities will provide an excellent training base for the team’s final Olympic preparations and we’re really looking forward to being part of this historic event.”

The team will remain on site until 24th July when they move into the athletes’ village in Stratford ahead of the Opening Ceremony, with the Olympic judo competition itself taking place at the ExCeL Exhibition Centre between 28th July and 3rd August.
