As peviously reported by Podium, the team agreed a deal to spend the early part of July at the University, using the training facilities and carrying out a number of engagements in the local community.

Athletes Joel Redhead, Kurt Felix and Neisha Bernard-Thomas departed the region last week, but not before the University invited local primary school children to hand deliver good luck cards to the Caribbean hopefuls.

The University of Sunderland's Director of Sport, Ivan Whitfield, also presented the athletes with University colours, and both parties were in agreement that the camp had been a success.

The Grenadian Chef de Mission, Conrad Francis, said ahead of their departure: "We have really enjoyed our time here. The facilities have been excellent and the people have been so friendly. The only downside has been the weather!"

Sean Percival, University of Sunderland Institute of Sport Development Manager, added: "It's been fantastic to have the athletes here and our only wish is that they could stay longer, but, of course, their purpose is to prepare for the biggest Olympics in recent memory.

"The University was very impressed with their professionalism, both within the University and out in the city at local schools."

He continued: "We hope we have made friends with Grenada and the athletes that were here. We wish them well for London and beyond."
