University of Bath to present sports exhibition ahead of the London 2012 Games
21 February 2012
The University of Bath's Institute of Contemporary Interdisciplinary Arts is to present hundreds of sports photographs ahead of the London 2012 Games at a talk next month.
The exhibition by artist Jo Longhurst, who is a former gymnast, looks at the human body in action and questions ideas of perfection.
Since 2009, Longhurst has also been working with elite gymnasts in training and competition at Heathrow Gymnastics Club and the World Gymnastics Championships.
The work entitled A-Z incorporates editorial sports photographs from various archives, which are displayed along the gallery wall.
Depictions of pikes, straddles, layouts and twists show elements of a gymnastics routine named after the gymnasts who invented them. A-Z also draws attention to individuals, histories, nationalities and the visual language on which the discipline is built.
Longhurst will be discussing her work with Dr Lynne Turner (Goldsmiths, University of London) on Wednesday 7 March at 7pm. Admission is free to the talk and exhibition, which will take place at the ICIA Art Space 2, 3WN foyer. The exhibition runs until 4 May.
