University of Bath athletes make impressive start to 2012
19 February 2012
University of Bath student and British modern pentathlete, Samantha Murray (centre) continued her impressive start to 2012 by winning the Hungarian Indoor Championships in Budapest at the weekend, whilst Katy Livingston (right), a graduate from the same university, took home a bronze medal.
Murray, who is originally from Clitheroe in Lancashire, now combines her training at the Pentathlon GB high performance centre with studying for a degree in french and politics.
Livingston, who finished only eight seconds behind Lithuania’s Laura Asadauskaite, completed a Coach Education and Sports Development degree at the university.
“It was a good weekend to have a competition and see where I am at the moment," said Murray, who followed up her win at the national selection competition in Bath in January.
“Winning was great, but I am not going to get carried away. It is good to see some of the changes I have made over the winter are working and hopefully I can take this forward to the next World Cup."
She added: "The squad has been training really hard and the hard work has paid off."
Murray returns to action in March at the opening World Cup of the year in Charlotte, USA.
Elsewhere, University of Bath student Chris Hay helped England secure team epee gold at the Commonwealth Junior Fencing Championships in Jersey.
The biology student featured in all of England's matches and wrapped up his campaign with a 9-3 win over Canada’s Mathew Anderson, who had earlier won the gold medal of the individual epee competition.
Hay, who came 10th overall in the individual competition at the championships, is the recipient of a Santander Sports Scholarship. The scholarships are designed to help students develop their sporting aspirations alongside their academic studies.
He will compete at the European under-20 championships in Croatia next month.
