Colleges and universities showcase projects as part of London 2012 Open Weekend

4 August 2010

Thousands of people attended London 2012 Open Weekend events across the country at the end of July as around 30 colleges and universities showcased a wide range of sporting, cultural and educational projects.

Dysarticulate – Field of Flags

At the University of Portsmouth, people were invited to make paper flags from recycled books and plant them as personal markers as part of the ‘Dysarticulate – Field of Flags’ project (pictured).

The Inspire Mark project is part of a Creative Campus Initiative and was aimed at weaving in elements of dyslexia, sustainability and discovery. Participants could create their own ‘intervention’ or join in one of the artist lead workshops and plantings.

The project is being filmed and documented so that it can be presented on the BBC live sites during Games-time.

Meanwhile, the University of Brighton staged a Paralympic sportswear and sports equipment design exhibition entitled Bodies Beautiful. Staff and students contributed to the project which drew on knowledge exchange with sportswear and equipment manufacturers.

City College Norwich staged an Urban Triathlon where shoppers were invited to have a go at cycling, rowing and kayaking outside Chapelfield Shopping Centre where the emphasis was on taking part and having fun through sport and exercise.

Artists and visually impaired students from the Royal National College for the Blind in Hereford displayed their photography work in an exhibition called Focus Here. There was also the opportunity to try out sports such as blind football.

Researchers from the University of Sussex's School of Global Studies followed the progress of student runner Adam Brickley in the Brighton Marathon. The project, entitled Run and Become, explored non-elite runners' participation, focusing on their motivations to run and their experiences of body and mind transformation as they trained for and completed the marathon.

As Brickley trained he compiled a video diary of his experiences, expectations, motivations, concerns and injuries. This, and the material from the interviews, has been used by artist Matt Pagett to create a film and text installation for an exhibition.
