Students from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design have presented design strategies for Games-time big screens and event spaces to London 2012 bosses.

The two groups of MA Innovation Management students presented their conclusions to the London 2012 Live Sites team after more than three months research for the study, which was entitled The Uncertainty Project.

The project involved analysing online information about big screens in cities such as Vancouver, Tokyo, Beijing and Melbourne before visiting six of the 19 Live Sites already installed across the UK for the 2012 Games.

Jamie Brassett, the MA Innovation Management Course Director, said: “The project, and the course, values giving a safe environment for failing and experimental risk-taking, while adopting creative approaches to innovation and its management. (This is because) failure to learn from failure leads to failure.”

Live Sites, operated by the BBC for London 2012 in collaboration with local councils, is the first project of this scale of a network of interconnected interactive big screens installed in city centre public spaces. They will be used to broadcast the 2012 summer Games and for various community events during and after the Games.

One of the students involved with the project, David said: “Having memories from the 1988 Winter Olympics from my home town (Calgary), the energy, connectivity and pride that accompanies the Games is profound. The Live Sites provide the people of London with an opportunity to experience the Games in a way that is memorable and potentially very different from any other Olympics.”
