Colleges get creative at Thames Valley University’s London 2012 challenge
24 May 2010
Further education students got their creative juices flowing as Thames Valley University (TVU) held an Olympic and Paralympic themed challenge as part of the Creative Campus Initiative.
First year National Diploma students and those on equivalent Level Three programmes were invited to respond creatively to the ideals and events of the 2012 Games.
These ideas were then judged at TVU by a panel of experts, including Sue Davidson the Executive Producer of BBC One’s The Apprentice, which was looking for innovative ideas that could be explored through a variety of creative outlets; creative media, performing arts and visual arts.
Drayton Manor School came in third place, winning a bronze medal, Abbotsfield and Swakeleys School took the silver medal whilst the gold medal was clinched by College of North West London, for graphic design student Jessica Da Silva’s unique pictograms.
Sue Davidson said: 'The Creative Campus Initiative is a great way of engaging with young adults and bringing together the often disparate fields of sport and creative arts.
“The work presented was of a very high standard, and I was extremely impressed with the contributors’ attitude towards this particular Olympic challenge and the creative thought that they had put into it. Well done to all the school and colleges that took part.”
Jessica said: “I researched pictograms by different designers. I very much enjoyed this project and I’m very pleased with the final results. My family were very happy.
“I love my course because you have freedom to develop your own ideas and see your potential. I’ve learned such a lot already, and I hope this will help me become a designer in TV or fashion.”
Of the seven pictograms she submitted, Jessica’s favourite is wheelchair basketball – partly because it celebrates the disabled, but also because she used the Olympic rings as wheels and duplicated them to create a movement effect.
TVU is is staging a spectacular Olympic inspired exhibition from 27 to 29 May with more than 20 highly original cultural events and artworks. To find out more, visit the Podium events section.
