London 2012 inspired Legacy Champions Day is huge success
7 March 2010
Students from London 2012’s five host borough’s colleges recently took part in a highly successful Legacy Champions Day which involved a trip to the Olympic Park and a chance to discuss how the Games will shape the future of East London.
The programme, which has been recognised with the Inspire Mark, is the first time that students from all the further education and sixth form colleges in the host boroughs - Greenwich, Hackney, Newham, Tower Hamlets, and Waltham Forest – have come together for a structured event designed just for them.
Each college selected 10 ‘Legacy Champions’ to act as ambassadors, hear speeches from Olympic javelin gold medallist and Newham Ambassador, Tessa Sanderson CBE, Paralympian swimmer Dervis Konuralp and London 2012's Head of Education, Nick Fuller
The champions also took part in workshops facilitated by the Olympic Park Legacy Company where they had chance to comment on plans for the legacy before visiting the View Tube, the viewing platform for the Olympic Park, where they saw the progress on the aquatics centre and the main stadium.
Ruth Lomax from Hackney Community College said: “The host borough colleges have been working very effectively together to help local people make the most of the opportunities of the Games. The Legacy Champions project is just one example of this and we’re all really pleased to have it officially recognised with the Inspire Mark.”
The Legacy Champions programme involves the following institutions; Brook House Sixth Form College, Greenwich Community College, Hackney Community College, Leyton Sixth Form College, Newham College of Further Education, Newham Sixth Form College, Sir George Monoux College, Tower Hamlets College, and Waltham Forest College.
