Hackney College's Olympic and Paralympic Week is a great success
05 March 2010
Students showcased a variety of different skills recently as Hackney Community College held a successful week based around the Olympic and Paralympic values.
The week included a trip to the Olympic Park for the College’s newly crowned Legacy Champions student ambassadors, whilst there was also an awards ceremony, a spectacular display by the College’s basketball team, healthy activities put on for local children and cuisine from around the world.
Ruth Lomax from the College explains: “Hackney Community College is fully embracing the values and opportunities of the Games. This week is a great example of how people of all talents and interests can get involved.
“Students made use of the excellent tutorial materials available on the LOCOG, Get Set and Vancouver websites, and there was lots going on outside of the classroom too.”
The Legacy Champions joined new friends from across the five host boroughs to meet VIPs and Olympians and debate the Legacy of East London - including a visit to the Olympic Park's Viewtube and workshops with the Olympic Park Legacy Company.
Student awards took place on Wednesday when Leroy Logan of the London 2012 security team was on hand to tell students that there's far more to the Games than sport and we all have the opportunity to use our skills to be successful. Students received awards that embraced the different values, including respect, excellence and friendship.
The College's talented basketballers set themselves a challenge of shooting 2012 hoops in record time and succeeded whilst around 100 under-5s took part in healthy activities organised by the College's childcare students.
Hospitality students, including a group of students who had just flown back from the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games in Vancouver, served up dishes from around the world to represent some of the nations taking part in London 2012.
A number of apprentices at the LOCOG are studying for their business qualifications at the College and they gave a fascinating presentation to fellow students on how they are contributing to the planning of the Games.
The College also hosted informative displays about work on the Olympic park, volunteering in 2012, the symbols of the Games and success stories of current and past students.
