University of Birmingham to host Usain Bolt and Jamaica for London 2012 training camp
1 March 2010
The fastest man in the world and a three-time Olympic gold medallist, Usain Bolt will train at the University of Birmingham along with his Jamaican track and field teammates, it has been confirmed.
The University reached an agreement with Birmingham City Council and the Jamaica Amateur Athletic Association at last summer’s World Championship in Berlin but now the deal has been signed.
University of Birmingham Director of Sport, Zena Wooldridge said: “There’s already a real buzz at the University and I think this deal offers a great opportunity of a real connection between Birmingham and the Games.
“Initially, this has been driven by Birmingham City Council and the contacts they have built up over many years through hosting major sporting events.
“In this particular case I think the University was a very strong and obvious partner in terms of the range of facilities that we have on what is a very nice, leafy, green campus.”
Council Leader Mike Whitby added: “This is another major coup for the city of Birmingham. I’m absolutely delighted with the deal, which is the culmination of a great deal of hard work and testament to our growing political, sporting and business links in Jamaica.
“The fact that Usain Bolt and his team mates will be in Birmingham as they prepare to defend their Olympic crowns means the eyes of the world will be on our city.”
The city will also host the USA track and field team and Whitby added: “The media spotlight on Jamaica and the Americans will showcase our great city and I’m confident we can secure a long-term and lasting legacy from these deals.”
