Students meet Archbishop Desmond Tutu at Olympic site
05 February 2010
Two Hackney Community College students met Archbishop Desmond Tutu as the 78-year-old Nobel Peace Prize winner visited the Olympic park and declared ‘everybody has a contribution to make’ to London 2012.
Ayende Jamal Lewis and Dominique Darroux (seen pictured behind Archbishop Tutu) were proud to be part of the event along with local school children and a selection of workers on the site.
Archbishop Tutu, a King's College alumnus, signed the London 2012 diversity and inclusion pledge which demonstrates London's commitment to creating the most diverse and inclusive Games ever.
He said: "One of the things we can learn about the Olympics is that it joins people together. The Games are determined to show up and underscore diversity and unity in diversity. The Olympics will have a positive influence.
"I have got to say that sport did that for us (South Africa) fantastically when we won the Rugby World Cup and Nelson Mandela came out in a Springbok shirt.”
And speaking about the legacy of the games Archbishop Tutu added: "The Olympics will have a positive influence."
