Students to Compete for Team GB at Vancouver 2010
1 December 2009
Four current students have been named in the Great Britain Team which will compete at the next Olympic Games: Vancouver 2010 (Ice skating team). Both pairs selected to compete in the Ice Dance competition are current students, having been supported through education and training by the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS).
Nottingham Trent University students Nick Buckland (studying Law) and his partner Penny Coomes (Psychology) will travel to Canada to contest the Ice Dance competition, following on from an excellent and full season without injury. This included competing as part of Team Great Britain at the World University Games in China in February. Penny said, “We always thought that taking part in the Olympic Winter Games was such a long-shot, but of course it was a massive ambition for both of us. We have long-term hopes in the sport, but to have been selected for the Olympic Winter Games at this stage does feel absolutely amazing.”
Current students and TASS athletes David Kemp and Stacey Kind will compete in the pairs competition.
Stacey said earlier this year “I have been working since I was six with the goal of competing at the Olympics” before excellent results this season qualified them for a place at the Games.
Northern Irish skater Jenna McCorkell, also a former TASS athlete, was similarly thrilled to have been selected for the singles event, “I’ve been fortunate enough to have won the British title seven times, but the Olympic Winter Games is the pinnacle of our event. I’m thrilled to have been selected for Team GB.”
The Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games take place from 12-28 February in Vancouver and Whistler in Canada. Team GB at the Games will consist of approximately 50 athletes, competing across seven sports.
