'Talent 2012:Paralympic Potential' talent search launched

03 December 2009

With 1,000 days to go until the opening of the London 2012 Paralympic Games, UK Sport and ParalympicsGB have launched ‘Talent 2012: Paralympic Potential’ - the last nationwide drive to find British sportsmen and women with the potential to become Paralympic champions in 2012.

Talent 2012 : Paralympic Potential

There is still time to become a Paralympic Gold medallist in front of a home crowd in 2012. Athletes with an impairment have never had a better chance to put themselves forward for a once in a lifetime opportunity and to enter the Olympic Stadium at Stratford as part of the ParalympicsGB team. The campaign is open to athletes aged between 15 and 35 with any form of impairment who believe they have what it takes to become a Paralympic Champion in 1000 days time.

If you can answer yes to the questions below, then maybe you have gold in you - this really is your last chance to find out if you have what it takes to win gold in London 2012! The closing date for applications is MONDAY 11 JANUARY 2010, so don’t delay.

  • Do you have an impairment?
  • Do you have a UK Passport (or are you eligible for one)?
  • Are you aged between 15 and 35 years old?
  • Do you have a sporting background in any sport?
  • Do you have the desire, commitment and determination to win?
  • Are you up for a once in a lifetime opportunity?

Danielle Brown is a Beijing 2008 archery gold medallist and Talent 2012:Paralympic Potential Ambassador. The 19 year old Law student from the University of Leicester said: “It took me three years of hard work to make it to the national archery squad and last year was an amazing year for me winning gold at the Paralympic Games. A talented athlete starting out now could get themselves to the Paralaympic Games in London - how exciting is that!?”

The size and scale of the Talent 2012: Paralympic Potential talent search is unprecedented so close to Games-time. Whilst it can take athletes up to eight years to reach an Olympics, research has shown that potential participants for a Paralympic Games can be ready to compete at an elite level much sooner.

Chelsea Warr, Head of Athlete Development at UK Sport, said: “The ability to achieve a Paralympic Gold medal is a rare commodity and identifying those capable of doing so in the final 1000 days before 2012 will be no easy task. It is possible however, as results at the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing have shown”

People with any form of disability, who think they might have what it takes to become a Paralympic Champion in London in 2012, should register their interest before the 11 January 2010.
