Bishop Burton College accepted into Get Set
3 December 2009
Bishop Burton has become the first college in East Yorkshire and the eighth college in the UK to be accepted into the London 2012 Get Set Network.
The College is already an approved equestrian training base for the Games and has been engaging with the Olympic values thanks to the work being led by curriculum team leader for sport and public services, Sarah Barbacane.
Sarah and learners on the First Diploma in Sport volunteered at various disability sports events in Doncaster and Hull, working with young people with both physical and learning difficulties.
By blogging on the Get Set website Sarah was able to show how the learners were displaying the Olympic values during the course of their studies and on that evidence the College was successfully accepted into the Get Set Network.
Bishop Burton College principal, Jeanette Dawson believes this official recognition furthers the College’s commitment to London 2012 and the legacy of The Games. She said: “Bishop Burton College has been working incredibly hard to ensure it is prepared for and engaged with London 2012.
“We are an approved Olympic equestrian training base and we have already begun attracting major equine competitions, such as next year’s FEI Pony European Championships, to the region; raising the profile of both the College and East Yorkshire in the run up to the Games.
“However, we must not forget that London 2012 provides wide ranging opportunities, many of which are not related to sport, and for us to become a recognised education partner of the Games, embedding these core values in our learners and becoming a driver of the Legacy of 2012, we are demonstrating our wholesale commitment to the next Olympic and Paralympic Games.”
More than half of the UK’s further education colleges are now registered with the Get Set network and Bishop Burton has joined seven other colleges in being accepted into the network by demonstrating the College is displaying the Olympic values.
The other colleges in the network are; Canterbury, City of Westminster, Hackney Community, North Hertfordshire, Oldham Sixth Form, Tyne Metropolitan, and Wakefield.
As official partners of London 2012 Get Set, the colleges are able to display the 2012 Education Logo on their websites and printed materials as well as a plaque to commemorate the partnership. Learners also get the chance to enter exclusive competitions and prize draws and receive exciting London 2012 goodies.
