Creative Hull University students celebrate London 2012

19 November 2009

Students from the University of Hull Scarborough Campus have put their creative skills to the test in an exciting display to highlight London 2012.

Students launch the exhibition

The creative music technology and digital media students worked alongside Scarborough Museums Trust to produce ‘Charmed’ exhibition, an interactive audio-visual display based on a collection of charms collated by former Rotunda Museum curator William James Clarke.

The trust is one of a group of Yorkshire museums celebrating the Games with a series of exhibitions under the title ‘Precious Cargo’ and is concentrating on the theme of Yorkshire’s international past and its social and cultural trade links.

The title for Scarborough’s exhibition is ‘Here Be Dragons’ and it will be on display in The Rotunda – The William Smith Museum of Geology until Tuesday 24 November.

Robert Mackay, lecturer in Creative Music Technology at the University, told Scarborough Evening News: “The students have focused on a small number of charms taken from the 500-plus in the collections. Over the past five weeks, 13 students have collaborated to develop this installation which concentrates on four different categories of charms.

“Using an interactive touch screen, visitors to the Rotunda Museum will be able to explore the students’ work. It has been a fascinating project and that is reflected in this installation.”

Scarborough Trust is setting up its own youth forum called cultiv8 and hopes to attract younger people from the town to the project.

The trust’s exhibition curator, Jan Bee Brown, said: “This project will allow us to develop our youth partnership and begin the process of developing Here Be Dragons. Young people from local secondary schools have been invited to review the installation as a means of applying to be part of the group.”
