Students blaze the volunteering trail

11 November 2009

Several students have been busy working as Trailblazer volunteers at London 2012 and Podium caught up with three of them to see how they have found the unique experience.

Isabel Marks with Lord Coe and Paul Deighton

Isabel Marks is reading English at University College London, Charlie Miller is studying Sports Management at University of London, Birkbeck, and Marlies Dachler is studying for a Master of Science in Human Rights at London School of Economics.

Isabel is working in the Brand and Marketing Department, Charlie with the Public Enquiries team within the Communications and Public Affairs department, and Marlies is an Inspire Editorial Assistant which means writing content for the Inspire newsletter and project profiles for the London 2012 website.

All three are really enjoying their roles. Isabel recently got to see the sport pictograms before they were released to the general public and Charlie says responding to enquiries and helping members of the public is very satisfying, adding: “Seeing Seb Coe and Jonathan Edwards around the office on a regular basis is the icing on the cake.”

Marlies has enjoyed working on all different aspects of the Inspire programme. “I really hope that the programme manages to leave a lasting legacy. There is an amazing project, Supporter 2 Reporter, where kids get journalism training and go out into the field to cover sports events or interview sports stars.

“I worked as a journalist alongside doing my undergraduate degree and I would have loved to take part in such a program when I was younger.”

Marlies went to extraordinary lengths to become a student Trailblazer after seeing the role advertise on the London 2012 website. “I lived in Vienna at that time but I really wanted the job so I took a day off from my old job at the Representation of the European Commission in Vienna and booked a flight last minute to London.”

Charlie explained that it hasn’t been too difficult to fit in volunteering and studying. “I manage to get most of my reading done on the train to and from LOCOG. My volunteering is giving me a great insight into the world of sport and this is helping me with my course as I am gaining experience of the industry at first hand and studying it as well.”

And Isabel explained what she hoped to gain from the experience. She said: “As soon as I heard that London had won the Olympic bid, I knew that I wanted to be involved in some way.

“I wanted to volunteer as I feel that this scheme is a great opportunity to work within a commercial organisation. I hope to add to my CV to show that I have proactively sought work experience and that I have volunteered my time for free in aid of a worthwhile cause.”

More from Isabel, Charlie and Marlies will be featured in the showcase section of our website soon. For now, why not take a look at the video below featuring previous Trailblazers?
