6 November 2009
Plymouth College student Olympian Tom Daley took time out from his busy schedule to talk to sports students at University College Plymouth of St Mark and St John (UCP Marjon).
The diving world champion gave a talk to about 40 students at the college in Derriford who are studying for a BA Honours degrees in sports development.
The students, who are working through the Sport and Excellence module of the degree, talked to Tom about topics such as sports policy, the Olympics, the use of drugs in sport, funding, coaching and the balance between school, training and private life.
Third-year student Ashley Staines said: "I thought the visit was great, a real eye-opener to Tom's dedication and efforts so far. He's a really honest, polite young man, with the determination to succeed in and out of the pool."
UCP Marjon senior lecturer, Julie Stevens said: "As world champion, Tom is aware of his unique place in the local community and is happy to give up his time and share his experiences to support our students in their learning.
"We will be following his progress with great interest and wish him every success, particularly in the 2012 Olympics."
