Creative Cornish students make waves at BUCS Surf Championships

22 October 2009

Talented students from University College Falmouth and Truro College made a big splash by teaming up to produce an exciting programme of art, music and film for the BUCS Surf Championships in Newquay.

Inspired by the Sea students

The Inspired by the Sea project saw the group of 12 students showcasing their work to complement last weekend’s surfing competition, which is the largest of its kind in Europe.

The group worked with Regional Educational Legacy in Arts and Youth Sport (RELAYS), the Legacy Trust UK and Higher Education Funding Council-funded programme of sport and culture in the lead up to the 2012 Olympic Games.

One of the students involved, Emily Larrington said: "Our aim was to create an event that would explore the reality of surfing in the British Isles and the issues facing its surf community, rather than the glamorous stereotypes which are so often depicted in the media."

Cultural Co-ordinator for RELAYS, Tamsin Godfrey explained the goals behind the project: "RELAYS aims to engage and inspire young people whether it is through event management, performing, showcasing work at an event or enjoying it as an audience member."

As well as Emily, the other students who produced Inspired by the Sea were University College Falmouth students, Jan Thompson, Adam Costantin, Thomas Jarman, Steve Wright, and Joanne Kennett, as well as Truro College students Bex Gallagher, Rose Goodship and recent graduate Aaron Connelly-Bayliss.
