GB Olympic swimmer makes a splash at HCC

15 October 2009

Hackney Community College welcomed four-time Olympian swimmer Suki Brownsdon to a master-class with BTEC Sports students.

The swimmer, who first represented Great Britain at the 1980 Olympics in Moscow – at the tender and impressive age of 14 – highlighted the numerous benefits of having “the greatest sporting show on earth on our doorstep” and how to make the most of this wonderful opportunity. She also spoke about the huge preparation involved in ensuring the event is a success by both athletes and the host nation.

She was accompanied by sport nutritionist Gill Hogan. Gill, who worked with the GB athletes at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, gave an insight into an athlete’s diet, fitness training regimes and how to compete at the top level.

Students were also shown a presentation about the Olympics and were advised about the wide range of career opportunities available from the Olympics and the sporting world in general.

Student and avid rugby player, Obey Merzouki, 20, said: “The session was very interesting, especially the nutrition element and how the body works to produce energy. I am a huge fan of the Olympics and would hopefully love to participate in the London 2012 games if they ever introduce rugby as a sport. If not, I would still be very happy to volunteer or contribute in any way.” (Obey is far right of the pic above)

The event at the college was organised by HCC tutor Brian Brinkley, who is himself a double-Olympian.

Hackney Community College is dedicated to helping local people maximise the opportunities of the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics, and continues to strengthen its ties with sporting figures, organisations and the local community
