9 October 2009

A Sparsholt College Hampshire student could win the chance to design a garden for the London 2012 Olympic Park after making it through to a competition final.

Susan Summers’ design is in a six strong shortlist for the Royal Horticultural Society Olympic Park Great British Garden competition and is now competing for public votes.

The designs have been carefully selected from 112 entries by a judging panel containing the Olympics Minister, Tessa Jowell MP, Philip Dunne MP, and Director General of the Royal Horticultural Society Inga Grimsey.

Entrants were asked to provide an A4 drawing, painting or collage of what they would like the Great British Garden to look and feel like, accompanied by a short explanation of what plants and trees they would use, as well as any other features. The winning quarter acre garden will celebrate the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, our heritage as a nation of gardeners and the unique qualities found in Britain’s domestic gardens.

Should Susan’s entry win the public vote, she will then work with the world class team designing the London 2012 parklands to produce a great British Garden that will be in bloom during the Games and remain in legacy.

Inga Grimsey was delighted with the amount of effort that had gone in to all of the entries. She said: “The standard of entries we received was incredible and just goes to prove that people’s passion for gardening is alive and well.”

A victory for Susan would seal a double Olympic success for Sparsholt College as its Equine Centre has already been approved as a training facility for the 2012 Olympic Games.
