2012 Legacy for the West of England
7 October 2009
The long-lasting benefits of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games for the West of England were highlighted at the launch of Team West of England in Bristol’s Colston Hall. Team West of England (TWE) consists of representatives from local Universities, RELAYS, unitary authorities, businesses and the West of England Sport Trust (Wesport). It aims to maximise the potential benefits of Olympic and Paralympic and legacy in the West of England.
Jonathan Edwards, the former world triple jump champion, world record holder and Deputy Chair of National and Regions for London 2012, said, “We are trying to maximise the engagement and benefit of London 2012 across the UK in terms of social, sporting and economic opportunities so that the games come to life for everyone. Partners such as Team West of England are essential to ensure that national projects and initiatives are interpreted at a local level and delivered effectively and coherently to make the most of this unique occasion”. Guests at the launch were treated to fabulous displays from Cirque Bijou and the Desperate Men as part of Team West of England’s promotion of the cultural, sporting and economic opportunities surrounding the upcoming Olympic and Paralympic games in 2012.
Speakers outlined the positive effects and opportunities likely to be generated in the area in the spheres of sport, culture, tourism and enterprise. They also highlighted the University of Bristol securing the Kenyan Olympic Team to use their facilities as a Pre-Games Training Camp and the University of Bath securing the Great Britain Paralympic Team.
TWE is part of Team South West, created by the SW Regional Development Agency and Sport England South West to ensure that real benefits are delivered to this region from the Games. TSW directly communicates with the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (LOCOG), and is a platform enabling the South West's voice to be heard.
Team West of England’s (TWE) objectives are to:
- Demonstrate economic added value across the UK from hosting the 2012 Games
- Increase levels of sporting participation and physical activity as a result of the Games
- Increase levels of engagement, inspiration and participation across the UK leading to social and community development
