02 October 2009
Rio de Janeiro has been selected to host the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games at the 121st IOC Session in Copenhagen.
The Brazilian city beat off strong competition from Madrid, Tokyo and bookies' favourite Chicago to win the right to stage the Games during the vote which took place on Friday.
LOCOG Chairman Lord Coe greeted the news saying: "We are delighted to be handing over to Rio de Janeiro who put young people at the forefront of their bid. The Games are now going to a continent that has never staged them before providing an extraordinary opportunity to transform the lives of 200 million South American young people through sport."
