Champion Sophie Christiansen leads by example at ParalympicGB Potential Day
1 October 2009
Paralympic gold medallist and Royal Holloway student, Sophie Christiansen gave words of advice and encouragement to aspiring athletes as Brunel University hosted a ParalympicGB Potential Day this week.
Sophie, who won two golds and one silver for Para-Equestrian Dressage at the Beijing 2008 Games, was on hand to tell the 70 hopefuls in attendance with their friends and families exactly how far they could go with the right dedication and determination.
Athletes between the ages of 13 to 38 took advantage of the try outs in west London with ParalympicGB coaches watching closely to see if they had the potential to represent the nation at future competitions including London 2012.
With sessions ranging from fencing to football and shooting to swimming there really was something for everyone, which was a vitally important factor in the day according to Sophie.
She said: "Days like this are paramount to getting young people involved in sport when they might otherwise not have had the opportunity to do so."
And Sophie, who is in the fourth year of her Masters degree in Mathematics, explained that, whilst it’s not always easy, it is possible to be a student and a Paralympian.
She said: “It’s very beneficial to be a student whilst training. Your timetable enables you to structure your time and universities are normally very supportive.
“At Royal Holloway they have a programme called STARS – Student Talented Athlete Recognition Scheme which is really helpful. The Maths department is so supportive too; whenever I’m away competing or training they make it so easy for me to catch up with the work.”
