Dobriskey Delivers as Students Shine in Berlin
26 August 2009
Lisa Dobriskey was among 13 students and alumni who won medals for Team GB at the recent Athletics World Championships in Berlin, just three years before the Olympic Games commence.
Building on the success of Beijing, where 70% of our Gold Medallists were students or alumni of the Further and Higher Education sectors, there were a number of remarkable performances in Berlin.
Alongside memorable Gold medals for Phillips Idowu (Brunel Alumnus) and Jess Ennis (University of Sheffield Graduate) in the Triple Jump and Heptathlon respectively there were medals for six current students. Lisa Dobriskey (Loughborough Uni - pictured above) took silver in the 1500m, while her fellow students Harry Aikines-Aryeetey (Loughborough College/Loughborough University), Martyn Rooney (Loughborough University), Simeon Williamson (Middlesex), Craig Pickering (University of Bath) and Michael Bingham (Wake Forest University) all picked up medals in the relays.
Dobriskey's success was a great moment for the Loughborough-based athlete, whose late start to the season through injury and focussed rehabilitation with coach and Loughborough University Director of Athletics George Gandy saw her arrive in Berlin race hungry and in the shape of her life.
“I thought I was going to go down, it was so close to the finish I just thought ‘don’t screw it up, don’t come fourth, hang onto it, hang onto it,” said Dobriskey. “It was such a great championship race to be involved in. Having come through the rounds it has made me believe that I’m a true championship performer now.
Other former students who won medals at the Championship included; Jenny Meadows, 800m (Liverpool Hope), Marlon Devonish, 4x100m (Henley College Coventry), Robert Tobin, 4x400m (University of Southampton). David Greene, 4x400m (UWIC) and Tyrone Edgar 4X100m (Texas A&M).
