The London Youth Games are Europe's largest annual youth sports event offering 80 competitions in 31 sports for young people aged between six and 19 from all of London's 33 boroughs.

In contrast to nationwide fears over female participation in sport, the figures also reveal that of the 104,463 participants, a healthy 48.72% were female.

Over the course of the year which included participants from all 33 London boroughs in 30 sports, it also revealed that 37.79% of participants were from Black and Minority Ethnic groups (BAME) which is in line with London’s population breakdown. There were also 4677 disabled participants.

The incorporation of new schools competitions as part of the nationwide School Games programme was a significant factor as participation numbers leapt from 2011’s then-record participation numbers of 71,025.

A record number of 1,677 schools took part in 80 competitions during the 2012 Games, 20 more than last year.

London Youth Games Chairman Anthony Kendall said: “The London Olympic and Paralympic Games have engendered a huge abundance of enthusiasm for competitive sport and the London Youth Games is the outlet for that spirit. We truly provide an elite experience for grass roots sport in London.

“It is now really important that we build on the momentum of London 2012 and continue to grow our competition, cultural and volunteer programmes so that by 2016, pupils from every school in every London borough will be involved in the London Youth Games.”
