Birkbeck University and UEL build London 2012 legacy with new campus in Stratford

4 October 2012

A unique collaboration between Birkbeck, University of London and the University of East London (UEL) will create a major new university hub in the heart of Stratford to provide a lasting legacy of the London 2012 Games.

The success of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games continues to have an impact locally, and the new campus is one of many extensive regeneration efforts in the area.

University Square is a joint vision of two distinguished and complementary institutions to create a major new university campus to meet the growing aspirations of local people at a time of great change and opportunity in east London.

Students will be able to study in order to upskill and to enhance their employment possibilities. It will provide education facilities not only for Birkbeck, University of London and UEL, but also our partner institutions and organisations.

The new £33m campus is absolutely central to Newham Council’s and Stratford’s regeneration plans, in helping students to achieve academic excellence in east London, an area of low participation in higher education.

Sir Robin Wales, Mayor of Newham, who backed the initiative form the start said: "The new education hub by Birkbeck and University of East London is an exciting addition to the world class facilities already available in Newham. The new campus will not only create a wealth of benefits for the local area, the borough and East London but will also inspire our residents to enhance their employment opportunities helping to provide a lasting legacy for the community."

Building began on site in July this year and is scheduled for completion in summer 2013, with the campus set to open its doors for the first cohort of students that autumn.
