Further and Higher Education behind ParalympicsGB London 2012 medal success
7 September 2012
Another impressive day at the London 2012 Games saw ParalympicsGB hit its medal target to surpass the total from Beijing four years ago and unsurprisingly students and alumni are at the forefront with Team FE & HE claiming 20 of our nation’s 32 golds, and more than half of our 110 medals.
Team FE & HE, consisting of ParalympicsGB’s students and alumni from the UK’s colleges and universities, has claimed 20 gold, 19 silver and 19 bronze medals which puts them 7th in the world, just narrowly behind the almighty United States of America.
Exactly 44 institutions can lay claim to educating and supporting our medal winning Paralympians with Leeds Metropolitan University and Cheadle and Marple Sixth Form College topping the Paralympic medal table thanks to alumnus Sarah Storey landing her fourth gold medal of London 2012.
Not far off the top spot is Royal Holloway, University of London thanks to an impressive triple gold medal haul from dressage rider Sophie Christiansen, who graduated with a Masters in Maths from the University.
Brunel University secured its fourth position due to current Business and Management student Natasha Baker’s double equestrian gold win.
Calderdale College, in West Yorkshire is another institution flying the flag for Further Education in fifth position thanks to sprinter Hannah Cockcroft who stormed to gold in the T34 100m and 200m.
With many students and alumni leading the ParalympicsGB equestrian success both The Open University and the University of Lincoln have secured a spot in the top ten with 1 gold and 2 silvers.
The University of Aberdeen equally have a total medal tally of three thanks to its alumni Neil Fachie and Karen Darke taking multiple medals in cycling.
The other universities making up the top ten are the University of Bath, Cardiff Metropolitan University and Cardiff University.
Royal National College for the Blind, Telford College of Arts and Technology, and Cambridge Regional College can also boast a gold medallist.
