Royal National College for the Blind to host Paralympic Torch celebrations
23 August 2012
The Royal National College for the Blind will be at the centre of the London 2012 Paralympic Torch Relay celebrations over the August Bank Holiday weekend period, as the flame passes through Hereford, one of the 34 communities to be involved in the procession, en-route to London’s Olympic Stadium for the Opening Ceremony next week.
The flame's visit to the College will ignite a series of live events, music and have-a-go Paralympic sports sessions for members of the local community to enjoy - all free of charge.
In addition to the Further Education institution's flame celebrations, four flames will be lit in London, Greater Belfast, Edinburgh and Cardiff before the Torch's meet at the spiritual home of the Paralympic Games – Stoke Mandeville next week.
Councillor Olwyn Barnett, chairman of Herefordshire Council, said: "It will be a great honour for our county to be hosting a flame celebration and to be part of the London 2012 Paralympic Torch Relay.
"In the county we already have an excellent reputation for promoting sports for people with disabilities and this event will build on the highly successful Blind World Cup tournament which thePoint4 and the Royal National College for the Blind hosted in 2010.
"We also have many Paralympic athletes in the county and hopefully this event will provide residents with the opportunity to show their support and inspire them to compete at their best in London" she added.
Director of Paralympic Integration at London 2012, Chris Holmes, said: "We are thrilled to announce that Hereford will play host to a flame celebration. This new concept will involve people from all around the UK in the spirit of the Paralympic Movement in unique ways relevant to the area. I know that people from Herefordshire will get involved in this celebration and help ignite passion for the Paralympics across the UK."
