The 20-year-old from Preston is currently studying Sports Science at the University, and begins her competition at 7pm, where she will go head-to-head with Russian superstar Yelena Isinbayeva.

Earlier this year, Bleasdale smashed both the British indoor and outdoor records, and she is currently ranked seventh in the world outdoors, with the seventh highest clearance in the world this year.

She will be hoping the support of a home crowd, which has already propelled university alumni Jessica Ennis and Mo Farah to gold in the Olympic Stadium can do the same for her.

Bleasdale is completing her degree through distance learning, which enables her to fit in the required training to compete at the highest level of athletics alongside her studies.

Head of Exercise and Sport Science at Manchester Metropolitan University Neil Fowler said: “The distance learning course allows students to vary the rate of their study, which is vital for athletes with busy training schedules.

“We hope that the understanding of physiology of training, psychology and biomechanics gained on the course will help Holly continue onwards and upwards with her career as a high performance athlete.”
