The University of Wolverhampton and the Emotion Regulation of Others and Self project (EROS) are hosting a free one day event for runners of all abilities on the control of emotion in sport and exercise. This event is part of the ICSEMIS 2012 public engagement programme and inspired by London 2012.
The University of Wolverhampton is the home of a major research project: Emotion Regulation of Others and Self (EROS). That research includes examining emotions in sport and exercise. We have looked at the emotions people experience before, during and after exercise and the effectiveness of interventions to help athletes regulate their emotions. The event will look at themes of Elite Performance, Athlete Welfare and Physical Activity and Health.

Elite performance is covered via research examining emotion-performance relationships and examining the effectiveness of strategies designed to improve performance by improving emotional control. Athlete Welfare is addressed by examined some strategies that some athletes use to regulate their emotions which might be detrimental. Physical Activity and Health is covered by examining strategies to help people learn to use exercise as an effective emotion regulation strategy.
The aim of the event would be to disseminate findings from these studies. Members of the public and runners of all levels should come away with not only a better understanding of why they become emotional, but also, practical tips on how to manage emotions effectively.

The University of Wolverhampton, EROS project, was selected to be part of the public engagement programme linked to the International Convention on Science, Education and Medicine in Sport (ICSEMIS 2012). ICSEMIS 2012 which will bring together the worlds leading scientists, academics and researchers in disciplines related to sport in advance of the 2012 Games. The pilot programme, being run by Research Councils UK and Podium, aims to engage the public with science, reasearch and the academic desciplines related to sport using the excitement and interest generated by the Games.
