In our own words: Athlete experiences of well-being and development in elite and professional sport

The Leeds Metropolitan University is hosting a free public performance which will focus on elite and professional athletes’ experiences of well-being, mental health, and development through their careers in sport. This event is part of the ICSEMIS 2012 public engagement programme and inspired by London 2012.

The presentation/performance will explore – through a narrative methodology – the stories that elite and professional tell of their lives in sport and illuminates current pressures and tensions athletes may face and identifies opportunities and possibilities for ways to better support athlete well-being across the career. The event will be developed from research conducted by Dr David Carless and Dr Kitrina Douglas over the past ten years. 

The presentation and format aims to make research more accessible, engaging, and practically useful to diverse individuals and the public. The presenters will draw on their experience of the ground breaking use of  performance, storytelling, poetry, and music to represent research.

       

Leeds Metropolitan University was selected to be part of the public engagement programme linked to the International Convention on Science, Education and Medicine in Sport (ICSEMIS 2012). ICSEMIS 2012 which will bring together the worlds leading scientists, academics and researchers in disciplines related to sport in advance of the 2012 Games. The pilot programme, being run by Research Councils UK and Podium, aims to engage the public with science, reasearch and the academic desciplines related to sport using the excitement and interest generated by the Games.
