Health, Sport and Physical Activity: What You Need to Know

The University of Hertfordshire is inviting the public to attend a free evening event to learn more about current Health, Sport and Physical Activity, inspired by London 2012 as part of the ICSEMIS 2012 public engagement programme. The event will include presentations, demonstrations and findings of research from sports science, physiotherapy and sports therapy practitioners, educators and researchers.

With the 2012 Olympics in mind, this evening event has been organised with a view to building a lasting health legacy for the local community.

Step-in Step-out Lecture Series

This part of the event includes a series of three, ‘step-in step-out’, 30-minute lectures, including time for questions and discussion given by experts from the University of Hertfordshire. Themes include:

  • Top 10 Fit Facts and Food Fiction presented by Lindsy Kass: Sports Nutritionist and Senior Lecturer in Sport Science, University of Hertfordshire
  • From thinking to doing; getting and staying physically active presented by Dr Stephen Pack: Sports Psychologist and Senior Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Science, University of Hertfordshire
  • Strong healthy bones; how to get them and keep them that way presented by Dr Jane Simmonds: Musculoskeletal and Sport Physiotherapist, Programme Lead MSc in Sport and Exercise Rehabilitation, University of Hertfordshire

Interactive poster exhibition of current and recent Health, Sport and Physical Activity research carried at the Health and Human Science research centre of the University.

Demonstrations and tours


The following demonstrations and tours will be available at the Health, Sport and Physical Activity: What You Need to Know event:

  • Sport psychology and nutritional assessments
  • Posture and fitness testing demonstrations
  • Health and fitness education opportunities – information about health, sport and physical activity courses and evening lectures provided by the university
  • Virtual and live tours of the university sport and performance training, rehabilitation, research and teaching facilities

         

The University of Hertfordshire, Faculty of Health and Human Science was selected to be part of the public engagement programme linked to the International Convention on Science, Education and Medicine in Sport (ICSEMIS 2012). ICSEMIS 2012 which will bring together the worlds leading scientists, academics and researchers in disciplines related to sport in advance of the 2012 Games. The pilot programme, being run by Research Councils UK and Podium, aims to engage the public with science, reasearch and the academic desciplines related to sport using the excitement and interest generated by the Games.
